At History's Playground, we believe some stories need to be seen and heard to be truly understood. Our documentaries capture history through film — recorded interviews, first-person testimony, and visual storytelling that put faces and voices to the archival record.
Where photographs and documents preserve what remains, documentary film preserves what people remember: how it felt, what it meant, and what should never be forgotten. Each project pairs on-camera interviews with archival materials from our collections, so the people who lived history tell it in their own words. Over time, this collection will grow into a library of films spotlighting the key voices and untold stories of our communities.
Our inaugural documentary project preserves the voices of librarianship through filmed oral history interviews. Librarians share their journeys, their work, and their reflections on the libraries that shaped their communities — including the segregated "colored" libraries of the Jim Crow era whose stories are at risk of being lost. Each interview is presented with its own archival record, complete with video, biography, and citation.
