Primary Sources

Access original photos, letters, and documents that bring history to life

Primary sources are history in its rawest form — the original photographs, letters, records, and documents created by the people who were there. This collection gathers those firsthand materials and presents them the way an archive should: faithfully, in context, and available to everyone.

There is nothing quite like reading a letter in its author's own handwriting or studying an original photograph of a place that no longer exists. Primary sources let you draw your own conclusions from the evidence itself — which is why they are the foundation of research, education, and family discovery alike.

Every item is preserved as a complete archival record with its source, date, rights, and citation, so students can cite it, researchers can trust it, and families can find themselves in it. As our partners and communities contribute more materials, this collection will keep growing — document by document, story by story.
